Hi there! My name is Lori Wilson. I was born in 1960 in Arizona. I have four children.
All my births were hospital births, having been in the military in Germany at the time. I became interested in childbirth in 1982, after the birth of my second child, and started to read everything available about pregnancy and childbirth. It wasn’t until 1986 that I pursued this interest. I volunteered as a nurse’s aide on a labor and delivery ward for two years in Germany where we were stationed. In 1992, I received an associate’s degree in nursing, thinking I could become a labor and delivery nurse. This proved to be much more difficult than I had imagined, as this is a specialized field. I worked as an RN on a medical floor for a year at Penrose Main. I also worked as a temporary RN and worked as a postpartum nurse at Penrose Community’s Birthing Center. It was there that I realized the epidural and C-section rate was very high. I initially wanted to become a nurse-midwife, but realized I would be under the supervision of an OB, as well as having to work under hospital rules and regulations. I didn’t want to be a part of that.
In July 1995, I began to apprentice with a local midwife. I enrolled in Apprentice Academics. This is an intense, three-year, home-study course run by a direct entry midwife. I made the state’s requirements in 2001 and passed the NARM registration exam.
I have attended over 200 births. Less than 10% of those transported to the hospital.
Due to the increase in competition in Colorado Springs, I have reduced my fee from $2,000.00 to $1800.00. This includes a non-refundable down payment of $150 due by first visit. There is a $200 discount if you pay it off halfway through your pregnancy. The fee includes all prenatal visits , the assistants fee, attendance at your birth, postpartum care (up to six weeks), lab work, PKU test preformed on baby. THere is an ultrasound machine available. Your ultrasound will be included in my fee. I do perform waterbirths and will provide you with childbirth education. There is also a lending library available. I do not carry malpractice insurance (liability insurance) as the state law does not require it and it isn’t available for Direct Entry Midwives.
All prenatal and postpartum care is performed at the Home Birth Midwifery Services office, 2211 N. Weber. Appointments usually last one hour. Friends and family members are welcome to any of your visits. There are toys available for your children.
I will bring all the equipment necessary for the birth, including a doppler for monitoring the baby. The emergency equipment, which I carry, includes an oxygen tank and DeLee suctioning equipment. Perineal massage will be performed during the pushing stage of your labor in order to prevent tears. Once the baby is born, he will remain with you unless there are complications. A newborn exam will be performed within two hours of the birth. My assistant and I will stay with you after the birth for at least three hours, longer if necessary.
Following the birth, I will see you at your house on the second day postpartum, and then you come into the center with the baby at one week, three weeks and six weeks. Well baby care is performed at these at all of these postpartum visits.
Please give me a call for a free, one hour interview! I will answer all your questions at that time.
